Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President, Jodi Marshall.

Minutes: The minutes of the October 2011 meeting were reviewed and approved. The November 2011 meeting was cancelled due to illness at the meeting site.

Treasurer's Report: Colleen gave the Treasurer's Report.

Old Business:
Bead Bazaar:
Lincoln Bazaar: Date set for Oct. 13, 2012. A venue has not been determined, but various possibilities were discussed.
Omaha Bazaar: April 14, 2012

New Business:
Next meeting: January 19, 2012 Laura will teach the project.

Lincoln Humane Society: Jodie is conducting a Supplies Drive for the local Humane Society. Items can be brought to the Jan. meeting and Jodie will deliver therm. Items needed include:
non-clumping cat litter, bleach, dish soap, Purina cat and dog chow, window cleaner, treats, towels and blankets, carpet samples, Kong Toys, collars and leashes, shoe boxes, and pillow cases.

National Teacher: Jodie will contact Jeanette Cook and try to make arrangements for a bead retreat in 2012.

Fish Cabochons: Jodie brought several more fish polymer clay cabochons. They may be purchased for $8.

Board Meeting: NBS Board Members are requested to attend a Board meeting just prior to the 1/19/12 meeting. (6:15 or 6:30)

There being no further business, the business meeting was adjourned. A silent auction of beads was held, and holiday snacks were shared.

Announcements: April announced that there was a quilt show going on at Pershing.
Kathi announced that the Down Syndrome Association for Families is having a jewelry sale on Nov. 12, 2011 from 8am to noon. Anyone with donations should contact Kathi for further information.

Treasurer’s Report: Coleen gave the Treasurer’s Report. She also listed vendors who will be at the Oct. Bead Bazaar.

April had a sign up sheet for volunteers to work at the Bead Bazaar. Members were reminded that the workshops with nationally known teachers are made possible by proceeds from the Bead Bazaar; therefore all members are requested to help in some way.

Mona volunteered to be in charge of the Member’s sales table.
Discussion was held but a decision was not made about having pot luck lunch for the vendors.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of the NBS banner? It was last used at the Bead Bazaar in Omaha.

This Thursday, 7:00 p.m. Eastmont Towers. Pam and Sharon will be leading us in this fishy project: So bring your polymer clay piece from Darcy! If you missed the meeting to purchase the focal, any eye-shaped cab will do :)

Here is what you will need for the "fish" pendant at the September meeting.

Size 11 seed beads (1 color or 2 coordinated colors)
Size 15 seed beads
Small embellishment beads (optional)
Fish piece
Usual needle, thread, etc.

You can use delicas for this project also, if preferred. You can also used an oval stone or even a rectangular or square stone or button if you prefer or do not have a fish piece. I have an extra one (burgandy and tan color) if someone would like to use it.

If you would like to get a start on your project, do a bezel of 6 rows of peyote in 11s with 2 rows of 15s on each side.

Also, I will be bringing the donated beads this month! Since summer is about over, and the kiddos are in school--maybe we can get some pieces worked up to donate to worthy causes.

is coming up next weekend!!! For those of you that are registered, class is 9:00a.m.-4:30p.m. both days. The address is 6850 L Street, St. Elizabeth Education Center. There is a list of supplies you can bring floating around--if you did not get the e-mail please let me know at marshalljodie@aol.com, and I'll be happy to forward whatever info I have. There are kits to purchase if you want to take the easy way out as I usually do :) Of course, you'll want to bring the usual beading supplies--favorite thread, bead mat, task light, needles. Am I forgetting anything?

For those of you not registered, please be aware that Sherry will be opening the class at the last hour both days if you would like to purchase any of her kits or supplies. I'm sure she has lots of goodies!! Also, a reception dinner will be on Saturday evening. If you would like to attend please come to the class in the last hour for the information--we usually don't decide where we're going until then :)

Sherry Serafini will be here on May 1st and 2nd for a two-day workshop! So exciting :) Here's one of the projects she may teach:

This is a "components" class; day one will be making pieces and parts, day two will be puzzling them together for broaches, pendants--whatever, really. As of last night, we only have three spots available! Members--send your check to the NBS post office box now!

SARAFINI WORKSHOP – Kathi Tiede announced that Sherry Sarafini has a conflict next fall but is more than willing to do a workshop for us in May. Kathi, Laura Focht as well as Sherry are working on all the logistics of choosing a new date, location, etc. If you have ideas or comments, now is the time to present them. Many thanks to Kathi and Laura for these arrangements.

CHALLENGE – Many apologies for omitting Lill Kaden and Linda Stevenson from the list of "tree" challenge entries. Both of these projects were absolutely beautiful and deserve more than honorable mention.

A message from Joan about tonight's meeting:

I had volunteered to provide guidance for making a smallish (3 – 3 ½ inch)flat snowflake ornament that should take less than an hour. If you want to make it, you will need to bring 12 of 4 mm bicone crystals in your choice of color and size 11 seed beads in white, crystal, crystal AB, or whatever color you want your snowflake to be or whatever color goes with your crystals (just a few grams or so). The finished snowflake is coated with“Future” to make it stiff. See you Thursday (the roads are suppose to be okay). Joan

IT'S BEAD BAZAAR TIME! - The bazaar is almost here! Gather up friends and family and join us for a great bazaar, Saturday, October 10, 10 am to 5 pm, Lancaster Building at State Fair Park. There will be lots of vendors and lots of beads, all for your shopping pleasure. If you can, we still need more hands to help out. Contact April Stevenson at beads@windstream.net to pitch in. If you can donate a food item for our pot luck for the vendors, contact Mary Reifschneider at maryidareif@yahoo.com.

THANK YOU! - Thanks go to April Stevenson for organizing the bead bazaar. She always spends a lot of time and does such a great job. Thank you also to all volunteers and donators. We couldn't do this without each and every one of you.

THANK YOU AGAIN! - Our thanks go out to Charlene Zweerink for sharing her dragonfly project at the September meeting. It was fun making them and such fun wearing them!

ARTBEAD BEADS - This is just a friendly reminder about the Artbeads donation to our society. Those kind folks requested feedback on their beads such as how we used them and how we liked them. Artbeads is willing to donate again in 2 or 3 months, so we need to let them know our thoughts. CAR POOLING - Do you need a ride to the bead meetings? Can you provide a ride? Would you like to car pool with other members? At the last meeting, a member indicated she didn't have transportation all the time so wasn't able to attend regularly. BEAD BIO - Jodie Marshall, our Vice President, submitted her wonderful bead story…My beadwork experience started as a child. My grandmother made cool things like rings with stretchy thread and plastic beads, and long ropes crocheted with those cheesy plastic pearls you could buy at the Ben Franklin--an entire bag for like 10 cents! I still have a couple pieces of her jewelry in my collection. I get inspired by almost everything! When in a dry spell, a trip to the mall to check out this season's clothing lines, maybe a walk outside, or play time with my grandson is all that is needed. This summer I created a set of jewelry titled "Ayden's Pool" after an afternoon with my feet in the kiddie pool with Ayden. It doesn't take much to get me going with beads and jewelry! Inspiration is everywhere if you take the time to look. Motivation? I have plenty of that! It's time I'm short on. Anyone want to come baby sit? I pay in beads!!

BEAD BAZAAR – Put the date of October 10 on your calendars. The NBS bead bazaar will be going strong! Join us 10 am to 5 pm, Lancaster Building at State Fair Park. If you can, volunteer to help out. Organizer April Stevenson can always use more people. Contact her at beads@windstream.net.

NEBR. STATE FAIR – Congratulations to all who entered projects in the fair! And to all who won ribbons! Way to go, gals!

LIBRARY – We had a great response to our request for new books for our library. Our books were lost in Librarian Nan Henry's house fire. Kate McKinnon and Kalmbach Publishing have sent a wonderful supply of great books. Members enjoyed them and already checked several out to read this past month. If you have double copies of books or magazines, we can always use a few more. Also, if you have a favorite artist and can supply an address, I will gladly contact them for a possible donation.

FREE BEADS – Artbeads.com came through with some absolutely beautiful beads. And they were free! Members picked out favorite colors and were provided with instructions on giving feedback to Artbeads online. Artbeads even wants to see pictures of our creations, so we hope to see some amazing projects in the next month or so!

CHALLENGE – Pam Ritchey came up with a really cool idea for a bead challenge. She got the idea from a quilting magazine where quilt club members chose a word out of a bowl. Our members came up with a great list of words and voted on each one. The word "tree" won, and members have until the November meeting to present their interpretation.

SEPTEMBER MEETING – Join us for Charlene Zweerink's Dragonfly project. This beautiful little dragonfly can be used for a pin, a charm or just about anything you can imagine. The supply list will be coming your way soon, so gather up the beads and come to the meeting!

FALL WORKSHOP – Plans are coming together for our November bead retreat. Mona Jenkins is gathering information for a wine tour and tasting, a catered lunch and an afternoon bead project. It all sounds delicious, and we can't wait.

NEBR. STATE FAIR - Demonstrators are needed at our table at the Nebraska State Fair, Saturday, August 29, 10 am to 2 pm. Volunteer to get a free gate pass! Contact President Mary Reifschneider to sign up.

STATE FAIR ENTRIES – There's still time to enter this last Lincoln fair! Log on to statefair.org and click on the Entry Book/Forms tab. It's free, so enter!DUES - A gentle reminder… $18 yearly dues were due in June. Send checks to Nebraska Bead Society, PO Box 30633, Lincoln, NE 68503. Or better yet, come to our next meeting, August 20!

LIBRARY – Due to an unfortunate, heartbreaking house fire at Librarian Nan Henry's house, our complete library along with Nan's beads and beading supplies, was totally lost. Members pitched in with bead donations, and Mona Jenkins even brought past issues of beading magazines and books from her own library. She also donated a beautiful tote to hold bead donations for Nan. You can donate magazines and books, as well as beads for Nan any time. Bring items to the next meeting!Secretary/Editor Sharon Ritchey has written to several bead artists and publishing companies for donations of books to revive our library. If you have any suggestions of anyone to contact, please feel free to contact Sharon with addresses, earthbead@aol.com.

FREE BEADS - Sharon has been in contact with Art Beads who has offered to send free beads for us to try. Art Beads is asking us to provide feedback on the beads, and we may send pictures of the projects we have made. The beads should be available for distribution at the August meeting. SO… If you would like to try some beads for free, come to the meeting!

AUGUST MEETING – Just in case you missed the supply list for the dodecahedron project Mary Goddard is presenting for the August meeting… Crystal Fireline 6 lb. or 8 lb. test (if using dark beads Smoke fireline will also work), beading needle, 30 round beads between 4mm and 8mm (all 30 beads should be the same color and size), bead mat, paper for notes.

FALL WORKSHOP – We talked about doing a "bead-in" perhaps for the November meeting. We could purchase or download a workshop, get together and have a wonderful time! MEMBER PROFILE – President Mary Reifschneider… Hi to all bead members! I had tried Indian looming (with cub scouts) and wanted to do more. Someone in my doctor's waiting room had on a beautiful bracelet, and I asked if she had made it or bought it. She turned and everything she had on, earrings, necklace and bracelet, was coordinated. She was April Stevenson, and she invited me to check out the bead society. She was the president at that time. That was several years back now, and I have enjoyed being part of this group while it grew. I love to share my enjoyment of beading and always seem to find something new to do. There is just never enough time to do it.

Bead and Button trip?

Hey, guess what? It's the third Thursday of October!! That means tonight is the Bead Society meeting! Eastmont Towers, across the street for the mall on "O" street, 7:00 p.m. Come join us if you can--Rodger Pabian will be our guest speaker. For those of you who do not know Rodger, he makes the most amazing cabochons and will be talking to us this evening about gemstones.

How many made it out to the Bead Socitey's Bead Bazaar last Saturday? I hope to be able to post some pics soon :)
